How ironic

remi_inconnu_watch_2_opt

Was thinking of stopping by Watches, Etc. at 48 Washington St. in Wellesley today to get a watch fixed. Checked out the store’s website. Store hours aren’t listed.

Don’t forget to register to vote

From the Wellesley Town Clerk:

Voting? Register by August 27th & October 15th

Will you be voting in the upcoming Massachusetts State Primary and State Election?  Are you registered to vote? Are you sure?

The Wellesley Town Clerk office hours are 8:00am - 5:00 pm  Monday through Friday.  On August 27 and October 15 there will be extended hours for voter registration from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

The Massachusetts City and Town Clerks Associations urge all residents to check their voter registration (and party affiliation) by August 27th for the September 16 State Primary and October 15th for the November 4 Presidential Election.

Even if you have been registered to vote for years, many Federal and State laws impact your registration status. If you have moved, changed your name, or your local street list form was not received at city or town hall, you may encounter an issue at the polls.

When you registered to vote, you should have received a confirmation notice from the Registrars. If not, your registration may not have reached their office. If your local census form was not received by the town clerk and you received a postage paid notice of inactivation, fill it out and send it in by the August 27th deadline for the State Primary or October 15th deadline for the Presidential Election.

If there is an issue with your voting status, in some cases, you will have to fill out an affidavit and show identification at the polls. In other cases, you may be offered a Provisional Ballot that will only be cast if your registration eligibility is verified.

City and Town Clerks want all eligible citizens to be able to cast their ballot.  Act now.  Don’t wait.  Check your voter registration status!  CALL 781-431-1019 ext 2250 or email knagle@wellesleyma.gov if you have any concerns.

Susu’s chandelier

A blogger is wowed by a chandelier — in the women’s restroom — at Susu Bakery Boutique in Wellesley on Washington St. At least we don’t feel so weird about pointing out the fireplace in the men’s restroom at Town Hall now.

High school student parking lot in jeopardy

That’s the word from this Globe story about a proposal expected to be introduced at the School Commitee meeting on Tuesday. Apparently there won’t be enough space for student parking once the new high school building construction starts, and students who drive would need to take shuttle buses or find another way to school.

Rte. 9/16 bridge “work of art” almost done

Eleven years in the works, the bridge could be done by this fall, according to Mass Highway officials. Meanwhile, Wellesley man-about-town Tory DeFazio calls the bridge a “work of art,” partially explaining the project’s length. From the Globe:

“The stone work on the bridge is part of the character of the town,” DeFazio said.

“It inspired other construction - churches, fire station, the clock tower - that adds to the beautification of the town.”

Ranking Wellesley College and Babson

The annual U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings are out and the local colleges fared well as usual (methodology here). The magazine put Wellesley College at #4 among liberal arts schools behind only Amherst, Williams and Swarthmore (Wellesley’s tuition and fees are listed as $36,640).  Babson grabbed honors as the top entrepreneurial undergrad program for the 12th year in a row. Babson ranked #25 among business programs and #22 in international business.

Wellesley Recreation offers online registration for fall programs

For the first time, the Wellesley Recreation Department will offer online registration. It kicks off Sept. 9 at 7am for residents here.

The Camera Place closing shop

Camera Place shuts down Sept 30 2008

The Camera Place at 24 Church St. is shutting down at the end of next month, the latest casualty of a photography world turned upside down by digital technology we suspect (Ponds Camera Shop on Central St. in Wellesley was replaced after 30 years by a home decorating store in March). Camera Place owner Bob Williams is taking a poetic approach to his store’s demise, as seen in the notice on the store’s front window

Camera Place is closing soon. Sept. 30, Yep high noon.

Thank you all for business….lots, loyalty and kindest thoughts.

Your wonderful images, stories and files for 33 years have made us smile.

But times have changed and profits are low. So, loathe to say we have to go.

Come claim your photos and repairs. What’s yours is yours. We know you care.

For photo advice once we have gone just email us and we’ll respond.

Thank you, Bob Williams (TCP573@aol.com)

Mass Hort financial picture goes from bad to worse to whatever comes after worse

As reported in the Swellesley Report early this month, the Mass Horticultural Society based in Wellesley has been hurting more than ever financially, with several of the outfit’s usual programs being axed or potentially revised. More details have emerged on the situation this week in the MetroWest Daily News and now the Boston Globe, on Page 1 of the newspaper today.
