The town is still looking for a replacement for Fire Chief Kevin Rooney, who in May announced he was looking to retire this past September. From the Wellesley job board:
The Town of Wellesley, Massachusetts (pop. 27,000) is seeking to fill the position of Fire Chief which is becoming vacant after the retirement of the incumbent after eight years of service as Chief of the Department. The Department consists of 57 fulltime uniformed employees and an operating budget of $4.1 million. Appointed by a five member Board of Selectmen, the Fire Chief serves as the community’s Emergency Manager. Minimum qualifications include: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Business or Public Administration, Master’s preferred; completion of the Massachusetts Chief Fire Officer Management Program, ten years of fire suppression experience as a fulltime uniformed member in an organized fire department and at least four years of experience in a supervisory capacity. Candidates must have demonstrated experience and skill within the following critical areas: budgeting, crafting collaborative interagency relationships, labor management relations in a unionized environment, pacing change, fireground management, incident command and emergency management. Graduates of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program are encouraged to apply. Hiring range is $105,000 — $115,000, depending upon qualifications. A new pizza joint, Northend Wellesley-Pizza, is planning to set up shop at the east end of Washington Street, according to this Townsman report. It’s getting a bit crowded with Wellesley Hills House of Pizza and Peter’s Pizza already down that end of town.
The International Herald Tribune profiles a Wellesley company called Aptius Education that is starting to cash in on the demand by business people to learn Mandarin by distributing Chinese textbooks and other instructional materials:
“This is the fastest-growing language in higher education,” said [Nader] Darehshori, 71, a co-founder of Aptius who spent a dozen years as chief executive of the educational publisher Houghton Mifflin. “There are large numbers of American students and businesspeople taking Chinese. If you want to sell something in China, it helps to know their language.”

WCAC-TV will partner with The Needham Channel to co-produce the 2008 Thanksgiving Day High School Varsity Football game at Memorial Field in Needham for cablecast on the local cable channels in both Needham and Wellesley. The replay of the game will be 8:00 pm Thanksgiving Day evening on the local cable channel in Wellesley (channel 9 Comcast/channel 39 Verizon.) Replays of the 2006 and 2007 games will show during Thanksgiving day as well.
While it’s been a tough season for the Wellesley team, there is good news for one alum, Thomas Claiborne, who is making his mark at Boston College. At least one member of the BC coaching staff thinks the team’s starting right guard has a shot at the pros. He wouldn’t be the first Wellesleyite to play in the NFL. Not sure who was, but among them: Greg Comella, who played fullback for the New York Giants in Super Bowl IIIV and part of the Comella clan that operates a restaurant bearing their name in Wellesley.
