Wellesley celebrates status as state’s first EPA Green Power Community

Federal and state muckety-mucks descended upon Wellesley Town Hall Tuesday to honor Wellesley as the state’s first Green Power Community, as designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The town-appointed Sustainable Energy Committee spearheaded a Power to Choose campaign that encouraged residents, businesses, colleges and other organizations to purchase all or part of their electricity through Wellesley Renewable Energy, which gets power from a Maine wind farm. Wellesley earned its Green Power Community status by having at least 3% of community-wide power come from green energy (Wellesley’s number is now better than 4%).

Even more impressive than all this though? All the energy consumed sending us 5 press releases on this news from 5 different parties!
