Tight squeeze on Smith Street

147Smith St. was looking mighty clogged up today for most of the late afternoon during the Wellesley vs. Needham (middle school) track meet.  It seems that it’s regular practice for the away teams to pull up to the track, park their buses halfway on the street and halfway on the sidewalk, in clearly marked no parking areas, and stay there during the entire meet.  We’re told it’s the same story during other sporting events.

We can’t see why this is an accepted practice since the Wellesley High School parking lot is all of two tenths of a mile away from the track, and only that far if the buses park in the absolute nether regions of the lot.  As far as fearing for the students’ safety as they walk that great distance to their buses at the meet’s completion,  the town of Wellesley has considerately supplied them with sidewalks on each side of the street as well as a choice of three crosswalks as they journey from the track to the waiting buses.  Perhaps a water station could be set up, too.
