Newton Police sent out this alert late Monday morning:
There is a water main break on Washington St at the Wellesley line. Avoid the area, the road is unsafe. Traffic is detoured onto Grove St.
Wellesley Police issued an update early afternoon:
ROUTE 16 ( WASHINGTON ST) IS CLOSED AT THE NEWTON LINE DUE TO A WATER MAIN BREAK. Due to a significant water main break in the city of Newton, Rt 16 (Washington St) is completely closed at the Wellesley/Newton line. The problem is located at the intersection of Washington St and Concord St in Newton. The road has been damaged by the water main break and crews are working at this time to locate and fix all of the problems.. Washington St (Rt 16) is closed into Newton. All traffic is being detoured on River St to Walnut St. There are traffic backups eastbound on Rt 16 due to this closure. Newton Police has Washington St closed westbound at Grove Street in Newton. Please avoid the Route 16/Washington St area in the Lower Falls or expect backups and travel delays. A message will be sent out once the road is open. However, it is likely that the work will continue through the evening commute.
