The Wellesley High School girls’ tennis team ran its record to 24-0 in winning the Division 1 state title on Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over Nashoba Regional on neutral ground in Shrewsbury. Sisters Caitlyn and Ashley Avery (22-0 in her senior season) both won their singles matches, with freshman Caitlyn taking the clincher 6-2, 7-5. The doubles team of Pooja Reddy and Alexis Tsang also scored a win for Wellesley over 19-2 Nashoba.
Coach Alan Brazier had this to say about going undefeated to the MetroWest Daily News: “I refused to talk about it. I wasn’t going to emphasize that; it wasn’t going to be motivation for us. Staying undefeated was never the goal. The goal was always a state championship, and being undefeated is a nice anecdote to add to this special season.”
