Wellesley seeks new planning director

Rick Brown is retiring in March after 36 years on the job. He’ll be a tough act to follow, with involvement in such projects as Wellesley Center and Linden Square among his accomplishments. If you’d like a shot at replacing him as Wellesley’s planning director and enacting your idea to put a dome over Hunnewell Field to ensure future fireworks displays don’t get rained out, or whatever, here’s the start of the job posting from the town web site.

Under the general policy direction of the Planning Board, the Planning Director is responsible for the municipal planning activities of the Town.  The incumbent directs and administers the municipal planning, zoning and subdivision control programs within the Town as delineated by state statute and the Town’s Bylaws.  The Director serves as the Town’s principal professional adviser and resource on planning and development issues, and is responsible for recommending, preparing, and implementing the policies, programs, plans and studies needed to guide both the short-range and long-range development of the Town and address planning and land use issues and opportunities facing the Town.

Town Meeting agendas set for Oct. 20

The Advisory Committee lays out the agendas for back-to-back Town Meetings on Oct. 20 to address the issues of the new Wellesley High building plans and adding classrooms to the existing building.

Wellesley is bearer of good tidings about economy

The Globe reports that Wellesley town officials spent $2.6 million less in fiscal 2008 than they could have. Don’t be looking for them to blow it on a big party, but it could lessen the need for an operating budget override vote next summer.

Dress like a Selectman?

Had an inquiry recently from a reader wondering whether the town sells any “official town of Wellesley apparel.” We checked with the town clerk, who told us that there are “No official town togs; [But that Wellesley High School] has all sorts of things sold by teams and booster clubs.”

Funny spot for a fireplace

Town Hall fireplace

Here’s a quirky thing about Wellesley Town Hall. It has six fireplaces (or what used to be working fireplaces), including one in the men’s room on the main floor.  Town Clerk Kathy Nagle tells us that the that building, originally erected in the 1880s and presumably heated by coal and fireplaces, kept its fireplaces even through renovations. The other fireplaces in the building are in the Felix Juliani meeting room, the South foyer, the Treasurer’s office, the Assessor’s office and the Finance Director’s office. No ladies, there isn’t one in your restroom.
