UPDATE (5/27): A second reader confirmed that there was a bear sighting at Reeds Pond, between Overbrook and Woodside on Saturday. She said her son and a friend were fishing when they were told to leave. Soon after, she saw half a dozen police cars and an officer who said a black bear weighing about 110 pounds was spotted. This is the same area in which a moose was seen a few years back.
Wellesley Animal Control Officer Sue Webb says bears have been seen in town over the past 10 years and are known to avoid people. She recommends putting away bird feeders from April 1-Dec. 1 since they attract squirrels and other rodents, which in turn can attract bigger animals like foxes and coyotes.
“Black bears are also attracted to bird feeders and will return repeatedly if they find a free hand out. They have a large area they roam in and this may be the same bear seen recently in Westwood, Dover, Needham and Weston. It was only observed briefly each time as it tries to avoid people,“ she writes.
On Tuesday, a reader wrote to us asking if anyone spotted a bear in the Overbrook Drive area over the weekend. Not to be confused with The Rugged Bear in Wellesley Square.
