A reader wrote to describe a phone scam attempted on her elderly mom in Wellesley. Fortunately, the scam didn’t work and was reported to the police (it’s not the first time we’ve heard about this sort of thing in town, having seen it in the police blotter).
The scam began with a guy calling the grandmother pretending to be her grandson. He said he’d been arrested on drug charges and needed bail money, but not to let his parents know. The grandfather got wind of the call and police were notified. The grandson was called and sure enough he was safe and sound on his couch, a couple of thousand miles away from the supposed arrest. The woman who wrote says her family has a password they use to verify their identities with one another.
