Town Meeting this week approved allowing the Board of Selectmen to renegotiate a lease that would result in Whole Foods replacing Star Market on Washington Street in Wellesley. The Tian Fu restaurant, which subleases from Star Market, would likely also get bumped. Those in favor said the move would spruce up the area (that Star Market really does look shoddy next to the shiny Reidy Field baseball diamond after all). Those opposed questioned the length of the lease (45 years) and the loss of a more affordable grocery store (note: Stop & Shop on Rte. 9/27 in Natick is about 4.3 miles away). More on the vote from the Globe.
We happened to pick up some take-out at Tian Fu about a week ago and the owners indicated that the Whole Foods move was not a done deal. Sounds like it almost is now though…
I am in favor of a new Whole foods.
Ps…I don’t think Shaws is inexpensive.
