Not sure what it is about the name Lucy but it’s now the most popular dog name in both Wellesley and Newton.
According to the town clerk’s office, there are 36 dogs named Lucy registered in Wellesley, followed by 32 Baileys, 31 Mollys. Daisy, Tucker, Rosie, Cody, Riley, Teddy, Lilly and Max rounded out the top 10. Last year, Bailey was the most popular dog name in town. Overall, 2,558 dogs have been registered, down more than 100 from a year ago.
In Newton, Lucy is followed in popularity by Maggie, Bailey, Riley, Daisy, Max, Bella, Charlie, Sophie and Buddy, according to the city clerk’s office. Lucy was also the most popular dog name in Newton last year.
I can vouch for the Lucy-ness of dogs in this area, with two Lucys in our immediate neighborhood, one a chocolate lab the other some sort of cute black and white pup who likes her belly scratched in the middle of the street by anyone who happens to pass by.
Lucy is not only a popular dog name, but overall in the U.S. has been rising up the ranks of baby names as well. It hit 101 last year, up from 323 in 2000. The name means “light”.
Lucy also registers high in national dog name surveys. In one national survey, Bella topped all dog names, inspired no doubt by a character from the Twilight book series.
As for dogs in Wellesley with less common names? There are plenty. They range from the oh-so-Wellesley names like Augustus and Wellington to the regional like Chowdah and Brooklyn to the adorable like Buttons and Buttercup to the sporty like Fenway and Tedy Bruschi to the unusual and amusing, such as Big Bob, Disco Dan, Gilligan, Jelly Bean, Lazydaze Jake and Zamboni.
