Wellesley Blockbuster: closing credits about to roll

You knew Blockbuster’s days at 284 Washington St. in Wellesley had to be numbered given the parent company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection filing in September, at which time the 25-year-old company outlined plans to reduce its nearly $1 billion in debt but avoided discussion of store closings. The assumption was that Blockbuster would shutter many of its  3,000 stores and focus more on digital delivery of content in light of changing entertainment consumption habits (can’t remember the last time we went to a Blockbuster…especially with such a good selection of movies from Wellesley Free Library and the Minuteman library system).

Now the Wellesley Blockbuster storefront features a For Lease sign from Haynes Management around the corner from posters for Toy Story 3,  Karate Kid and the new video game Call of Duty: Black Ops, which Blockbuster said this week it expects to be its biggest game rental of the year. The Townsman reports that the store will likely close in mid-December.
