Wellesley Police officers made 253 arrests in 2010, up more than 11% from 2009 and up more than 30% from 2008.
These were among the stats shared about calls handled in 2010 by the increasingly informative Wellesley Police Department, which says it plans to release such stats monthly this year. The force has already gotten off to an interesting start this year with the arrest of an armed student at MassBay Community College earlier this month.
Other notable 2010 stats:
* 25,614 calls for service, down just 6 calls from 2009 (We were surprised at first that the proliferation of cell phones wouldn’t have boosted his number, but what happens is that if multiple calls are made regarding the same incident, it only goes in the books as 1 call).
* Wellesley Police made more than 1,200 fewer traffic stops last year (7,225) vs in 2009 (8,483). Maybe those blinking speed meters on Weston Road are whipping drivers into shape?
* Wellesley Police performed nearly 2,000 selective traffic posts — that is, they showed up in neighborhoods where residents alerted police that drivers were overdoing it.
* Traffic accidents were way down: from 856 to 731
