Ginormous Wellesley to add 8th precinct

April 12, 2011 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Given that Wellesley’s population grew more than 5% between 2000 and 2010 to nearly 28,000 people, according to the latest U.S. Census data, we’re getting an additional precinct.

The Board of Selectmen has been working with GIS staff and the Town Clerk to prepare alternate mapping scenarios for 8 precincts. There’s plenty of trickiness involved in coming up with the right one, such as taking into account the populations at the town’s colleges and trying not to divvy up neighborhoods. Town Meeting seats will be readjusted as a result. Here’s a look at the maps and a primer.

A member of the Board of Selectmen and Town Clerk Kathy Nagle will display the proposed maps at the main branch of the Wellesley Free Library and be available for  comment at the following times:

Thursday, April 28 , 7:30-8:30 pm,   Arnold Room Wellesley Free Library; Friday, April 29 , 10-11 am,  Arnold Room Wellesley Free Library; and  Sunday, May 1, 3-4 pm, Arnold Room Wellesley Free Library. You may also offer comments/suggestions  via email to [email protected]
