Wellesley’s Recreation Department is exploring options for an ice skating rink near the tennis courts at Hunnewell fields. Much remains to be sorted out, such as who will maintain the rink, whether hockey will be allowed, etc., according to Wellesley Patch. But the general idea is to provide people in Wellesley with a safe place to skate during the winter, under the lights, and away from ponds, such as Longfellow Pond and Rockridge Pond. The Rec Department has maintained a small skating rink on the outdoor basketball court at the Warren Center, though the ice surface is frequently a mess due to snow buildup and melting.
The rink wouldn’t actually be far from Skating Pond, near the Wellesley High Track, where I’ve yet to see anyone skate in my years in town.
Wellesley already has an indoor rink in the Babson Skating Center.
