UPDATE: A reader who came across the accident asked us to get some clarification on how it happened. This is latest from Wellesley Police Department: The bus driver exited Brook Street and entered the rotary on Great Plain Ave., and lost control of the bus when he was entering traffic on the other side of Great Plain Ave. The bus went over the curbing on the rotary on the opposite side of where Brook Street is and struck a tree on the island before coming to a stop. The operator indicated that there was a malfunction with the steering and the accident reconstruction team is going to look into whether there was any sort of malfunction.
Wellesley Police yesterday afternoon responded to a school bus crash on Great Plain Avenue at Brook Street. Only a school bus driver was in the vehicle, and was uninjured. The driver lost control while turning on to Great Plain and hit a tree on a traffic island, according to WPD. The bus, which was towed away, was not affiliated with Wellesley Public Schools.
I live near Brook Street and saw the bus after the accident. I have a question. In the report they police officer said the bus was on Brook Street, turning onto Great Plain Avenue when the bus driver lost control. But when I drove by the accident after it happened, the bus was lodge on the island dividing Great Plain Avenue, but the front of the bus was facing towards Brook Street. How did the bus, when it got to the bottom of the hill, cross GP Avenue, turn around, and end up on the island?? It looked like to me that the bus was traveling towards Wellesley from Needham on GP Avenue and somehow turned and crashed on the island. Any details/clarification on what really happened are greatly appreciated.
