The Wellesley School Committee Tuesday night voted 4-1 to write off nearly $5K in school lunch debt, the latest move in the town’s effort to clean up — or at least make disappear — an accounting mess that at one point left Wellesley seeking to collect some $169,000 in school lunch debt. The committee has said many of the families involved probably would have gotten free lunches anyway if they had applied earlier on. Those voting to forgive the debt pointed to broader business office problems that resulted in the lunch collections being botched and family financial plans being messed up. KC Kato voted against the write-off, citing advances in collecting debt in recent months, according to a Globe story.
Richard Plouffe, a Wellesley lawyer who in the past has offered to buy some of the debt and/or offer his legal services to help collect the debt, wrote to us emphasizing the significance of the issue and suggested Wellesley voters keep it in mind when going to the polls next week to vote for School Committee and other offices.
