The Wellesley Board of Selectmen today have signed an agreement with the Archdiocese of Boston to buy the 8-acre St. James the Great plot of land at 900 Worcester St./Rte. 9 east for $3.8M. A special Town Meeting will be held on June 13 to seek approval for the deal.
“The plan is to use the site for recreational purposes and to finance its purchase with a combination of Community Preservation Act funds and a borrowing,” according to the town, which says Archdiocese reps met with parishioners on Friday. Ideas for using the space, ranging from skating rinks to swimming pools, have been floated over the past couple of years.
More details will be discussed at Town Meeting Monday night and at a special Board of Selectmen meeting on Wednesday.
Parishioners, in vigil since the mid-2000s, have repeatedly had their pleas to save the church rejected by the Archdiocese and Vatican.
