Julie Fund 5K walk to honor Wellesley woman, fund cancer research

June 4, 2012 by bbrown Leave a Comment

Julie Fund 5k Walk 2011The Julie Fund 5K Walk for Women’s Cancers will take place at Herter/Artesani Park in Brighton on Saturday, June 16 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., with refreshments, a live band, games and other kids’ activities, as well as a raffle.

The reason we mention this event is that it was established 7 years ago in honor of the late Julie Paige McAvinn, a young mother of three from Wellesley, Mass., who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2004. (McAvinn’s husband Peter is shown above addressing participants at last year’s event.)

In the past 7 years, the Julie Fund has raised over $2 million to help cover non-medical expenses for the families of women battling cancer, cancer research, and education of the symptoms of women’s cancers.  It’s affiliated with Mass General Hospital and Partners Healthcare. To contribute to the cause and join in the event, you can register to walk and build your own team at www.juliefund.org. For more information on sponsoring The Julie Fund Walk, please contact Becky Jensen at [email protected].
