From Wellesley Police Department mid-afternoon, Friday, Aug. 31:
The Wellesley Police and Fire Departments are on scene at Linden and Rockland Street after a natural gas main was struck by workers from the Rockland Street bridge project. There is a strong smell of natural gas in the area, and Linden Street is closed between Kirkland Circle and Route 9 east. National Grid (gas company) is on scene and shutting the gas down. Trains on the CSX line and MBTA commuter line have been halted.
The fire department is checking buildings in the area for natural gas. We expect this situation to be resolved shortly, however, there is a strong odor of natural gas in this area.
Well, that’s reassuring. My house better be there when I get home!!!
This bridge project has had a number of struggles…. hopefully this is the last big one.
