Sister Helen Prejean, a powerful voice in the national dialogue on the death penalty, will be speaking at Wellesley College’s Houghton Chapel on Thursday at 7pm in a presentation called Art & Soul of the Multifaith Center. The public is welcome to attend this free event.
Sister Prejean has helped to shape the Catholic Church’s vigorous opposition to state executions. As part of her ministry, she was asked to correspond with death row inmate Patrick Sonnier at Angola, Louisiana’s state penitentiary. After becoming his spiritual advisor and witnessing his execution, she wrote a book about the experience, Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States. It became a movie, an opera and a play.
