Whenever I think I’ve run across every business in Wellesley I always seem to stumble upon one that’s somehow flown under my radar, or in this case over my head (above Green’s Hardware, as it turns out).
I recently noticed a sign for TeamMates Fitness at 316 Washington St., then noticed workers fussing with the outside of the building a couple of weeks later, so I contacted TeamMates to see what was up. As it turns out, the business had actually been in town for 9 years just down the street at 310 Washington St., in an 1,800 sq. ft. space above Green’s Hardware, but is celebrating its 10th year by moving into a 40% larger space at 316 Washington St., half of which will be devoted to Pilates, the other half to personal training. The new sunlit space has been completely renovated, with hardwood floors, private changing rooms and a shower facility.
The business — which attracts men and women from Wellesley, surrounding communities and even Boston — is run by wife-and-husband team Leanne and Mike Lalor of Needham.
“Our business has grown and we wanted to move in to a space that would be more comfortable for our existing clients and offer us more space to grow the business,” Leanne says.
Leanne has been a certified personal trainer and motivational speaker for 20+ years. While she very much likes being at the new TeamMates facility, she also enjoys speaking at local clubs and events, and runs a website with a friend called www.GetFitOver40.tv that she’s hoping to “take to the next level.”
Mike is a certified personal trainer, too, though what caught my eye is that he spent 12 years in the National Hockey League as a defenseman, and was part of the 1986 Stanley Cup-winning Montreal Canadiens team (not that Bruins fans will hold that against him now that we have a recent Cup of our own, right?).
“As you can see, fitness is very much part of our lives,” Leanne says.
Having unique personalities on staff is key in Wellesley, where fitness businesses are maybe only slightly less numerous than banks.
Services provided by TeamMates include individualized fitness plans, private/small group training and healthy eating plans. Trainers are matched with clients based on the clients’ goals, and even do in-home training.
TeamMates offers various forms of Pilates, plus training techniques such as ballet barre, TRX (Navy Seal Training Suspension System) and even belly dancing to shimmy yourself fit.
Among the other unique aspects of TeamMates is that they have a personal trainer certified to work with cancer patients cleared by their doctors for independent exercise and physical activity. TeamMates also offers fitness programs for middle school and high school students, plus for older adults.
“Wellesley is a very fit town, with very active residents,” Leanne says. “They golf, play tennis and run… we like to offer workouts that can help them balance their active lifestyles by staying strong, flexible and injury free.”
