Thanks to research from Wellesley College class of 2014 student Caroline Templeton and Assistant Professor of Geosciences Katrin Monecke, we now know that the deepest part of Lake Waban is about 40 feet.
The researchers used an echo-sounder, GPS device, program written by Templeton and a computer connection to collect depth info from a boat and then compiled a bathymetric map to show off Lake Waban’s two sub-basins. The darker the colors in the map, the deeper the water.
More details here from Wellesley College.
Lake Waban is a GREAT POND under the laws of Massachusetts that go back to the Puritans. It is therefore held in common for all and must be accessible for use by the public. Why is the College saying it is private?
Hi Mark, we had done some research on this and suspected the same, that even if people are banned from walking around the pond there should be access to the pond itself for boating etc. Though acknowledge our skills at interpreting legal docs is not great. Bob
For information on GREAT PONDS, please read our page and link to state documents. (i.e. list of Great Ponds, and The Massachusetts Lake and Pond Guide). The Attorney Generals Office will prosecute if necessary. It is always better to work out something out of court.
