I was sad to see that Lucy Lord, a 61-year resident of Wellesley, has passed away.
I didn’t know Lucy well, having only met her maybe 5 times in total — always on Halloween — and spotting her a few times early in the morning when she came out to grab her newspaper at the end of the driveway.
She lived a couple streets over from us, and whenever we visited her house for trick-or-treating she was exceptionally welcoming, introducing herself by her alliterative name, inviting us in through the back porch, chatting us up, giving us some nice candy and sending us on our way. She seemed to have a Southern hospitality about her, though I see in her obituary that she was from Pennsylvania.
It’s been at least a couple of years since we’ve visited Lucy’s house for Halloween, with the kids old enough to orchestrate their own trick-or-treating these days. But when I mentioned to our teenage son that Lucy had died, to my surprise he immediately recognized who she was and expressed sadness.
For us, visiting Lucy was a treat.
What a nice tribute to Lucy. She was all of that. We knew her for 35 years as neighbor, friend and client. My daughter Elizabeth wrote up an interview with Lucy as an assignment in the Wellesley Middle School. If I can find it I will send it to you. When Lucy became terminal two months ago my daughter who now lives in Maryland sent her a card. Lucy was so touched, she called her right up and they had a nice talk. What a wonderful person.
She was always fun and upbeat and never complained.
