Wellesley youth helps tame 22-foot dragon

Shrek Dragon 1Wellesley’s Megan Kaye is joining forces with other young actors to control a 22-foot-long dragon that stars in the Weston Drama Workshop‘s ongoing production of Shrek the Musical at Regis College in Weston. The overall cast includes 50 members, and around 25 Wellesley residents are participating.

The pink and purple dragon, which has a 14-foot wingspan and weighs 60 pounds, is a puppet built by Peter Doucette of Waltham.

Wellesley’s Kaye says, “We’ve all had to think like a dragon and imagine how she would move. It’s been amazing.” Four puppeteers operate the dragon’s body parts and two more actors sing and move as the dragon.

“Together they are like a Greek chorus,” says Shrek’s director and Wellesley native, Dan Sullivan. “We chose to make the dragon multiple people rather than one soloist. It has worked out beautifully.”
