Sneak Peek: Inside new Wellesley restaurant, The Local

November 13, 2013 by Deborah Brown

The Local sign Nov 2013UPDATE: The Local opened officially on Nov. 25, 2013

The question we get asked in Wellesley more than any other these days is: “When is The Local opening?” We swung by the construction site on Forest Street last week to chat with Wellesley resident and The Local owner Frank Santo for a quick update on this expanding restaurant business, which  includes the original location in Newton and the recently opened Wayland location.

Frank couldn’t pinpoint exactly when the restaurant will open, but no matter.   Using our practiced eye, sharpened through years of waiting tables in college,  it looked to us like the taps would be pouring and the chicken wings ready sometime between Thanksgiving and early December. The bar was going up for training this week (and The Local is busy hiring people).

So calm yourselves, people.  It’s coming.  And it looks like it will be worth all the rigmarole that went into making it happen. (Think licensing, paperwork, contractors, and the rest.)

Here’s a rundown of what I saw inside the building, formerly occupied by China Sky.

The gleaming, brand-new kitchen. China Sky has been completely exorcised.

I wish to leave a comment for the owners of the Wellesley Local. My husband and I frequent go to the Local and have for quite some time. We have connected with the waitstaff over this time. We are both concerned about the morale of the staff and the number of people who have left. There used to be a great team spirit, but those who are left have lost most of the team. We are trying to support them.
