As if crooks haven’t tested Wellesley’s mettle enough by stealing copper wires and pipes, now they’re taking catalytic converters from vehicles parked in town commuter rail lots, according to Wellesley Police.
Thefts were reported at both the Tailby lot at Linden Street and Crest Road, and the Wellesley Farms MBTA lot on Glen Road over the past week or so.
Catalytic converters, part of a vehicle’s exhaust system, contain precious metals that can be resold. The converters can be extracted from your car within a few minutes via cutting tools. Your car will sound a lot louder than usual upon starting if you’re converter has been snagged.
