We’ve wondered off and on for years what’s up with the little boathouse with the big “Warning” sign on it that sits mostly hidden behind trees and bushes at the corner of Surface Drive and Washington Street in Wellesley. When we saw recently that work was being done on the building’s roof, we hit up Wellesley College to find out, since the boathouse sits across from the Wellesley College Club.
As it turns out, the boathouse has been leased from the college for years by a community boating organization that launches canoes and kayaks from there on the Lower Waban Brook and Lake Waban. Not sure, but maybe the sign has been left up to spook intruders.
Looks like the area was cleaned up and deemed safe – good question about why the warning sign still stands. http://academics.wellesley.edu/Chemistry/PSP/history2.html
