Hunnewell Elementary School in Wellesley has adopted the hawk as its school mascot for some reason (Hunnewell Hawk does have a nice ring to it), and students are working together to come up with an official image to put on a flag.
We’ve seen many a hawk circling around the school over the years, though our favorite bird was always the little owl that at least used to live in the big tree in front of Hunnewell. Maybe a hawk got the better of the owl?
We just hope Ms. G, that groundhog that Hunnewell kids have been backing as the State’s Official Groundhog, steers clear of any Hunnewell Hawks. Ms. G has a big day on Sunday, by the way.
And for those Hunnewell kids trying to come up with an appropriate depiction for their hawk mascot? They might want to compare notes with their Schofield Elementary School friends, as their school adopted the hawk as its mascot a year or so ago according to reader AG. Even Schofield’s literary journal cover is adorned with hawks.
