Despite a sometimes foreboding sky, the 14th annual Officer Savage Memorial 5K road race went off without a hitch aside from Deputy Chief Jack Pilecki’s microphone (though it miraculously worked fine when Wellesley High’s Katie P. belted out the Star Spangled Banner). Pilecki, shown in shorts above with Chief Terry Cunningham next to him, said the field of close to 300 runners was the biggest ever.
Matthew Uzenski of Boston was easily the winner with a time of 17:14 (5:33 pace) over the course that started and ended at Babson College.
As usual, lots of police personnel volunteered to organize and operate the race, and plenty ran too. And of course we heard someone say near the finish line: “Great day to commit a robbery in Wellesley.”
