Almost time for Wellesley 5-year-olds to suck it up, grab their lunch pails & get to work

Hunnewell School snail playground May 2013From Wellesley Public Schools:

Dear Parents/Guardians of an Incoming Kindergarten Student,

I would like to extend a warm welcome to your child(ren) as they near the beginning of their Wellesley Public Schools Kindergarten experience. As you may know, the Town of Wellesley recently approved a Proposition 2 1⁄2 tax override. With its successful passage, the Wellesley Public Schools are now able to offer Full Day Kindergarten to all of its students for the first time. Needless to say, we are excited about the learning and social-emotional enhancements the Full Day Kindergarten experience will provide for our students. At this time, I want to provide a brief update regarding the start-up of the 2014-2015 Kindergarten year.

The Kindergarten start will be as follows:

In mid-August: As the parent of an incoming Kindergarten student, you will receive a placement letter from your child’s school assigning them a teacher. Within this same letter, your child’s teacher will send an introductory letter.

In addition to welcoming your child to Kindergarten, your child’s teacher will assign each of his/her students a single, 30-minute “get to know you” meeting slot during one of the first opening days of school. At this meeting, your child’s teacher will “get to know them”, conduct a series of brief assessments, as well as answer parent questions.

Wednesday, August 27, Thursday, August 28 and Friday, August 29: These are the first 3 days of the 2014-2015 school year for Wellesley. For Kindergarten, this will be a “soft” opening. During those first three days, incoming Kindergarten students will only attend school during their assigned “get to know you” meeting slot. (e.g., Mary Smith’s “get to know you” meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 28, from 10:30-11:00 a.m. On that particular day, Mary’s parents would bring her to school for the assigned time, remain at the school while the “get to know you” meeting is taking place and then depart with Mary at 11 a.m. Mary does not stay for the remainder of that day. Additionally, Mary will not come to school on August 27 or August 29.

Tuesday, September 2: Full Day Kindergarten begins for all WPS Kindergarten students. From this point forward, all Kindergarten students will attend full days (8:30 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays have been and will remain a half-day for all students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 (8:30 a.m. to Noon).

I hope you find these details helpful in planning for the start of the new school year, but I’m sure you may have additional questions. With this in mind, we are hosting a parent forum for incoming Kindergarten families on Thursday, June 19, at 7:00 pm in the Sprague Elementary School Cafeteria to review our program and respond to any questions you may have.

We are very excited to be offering an expanded Kindergarten program and look forward to working with all of our families. I hope to see you on June 19th!

Sincerely, Dr. David Lussier
