Ah, New England, where people dress sensibly for each of the four distinct seasons in clothing that is functional, fits, and is long-lasting. True, some of the young ones go through their short-shorts or skinny jeans or baggy this-and-that phases, but when these sartorial blunders are tolerated, they pass, they really do. And admit it, even you have darted out (all day long) in yoga pants that you have justified by pointing out that at least they’re not leggings.
No worries, these are just minor bad habits, and bad habits can be left in the dust so easily, especially when some truly preppy offerings are visibly on display and so imminently purchasable right here in town at the newly opened North River Outfitter at 35 Central St. We’re talking cashmere and tweed and needlepoint belts. That’s right, clothing that’s so well made that you can wear it inside out and people will compliment you on your kooky fashion sense. Then, next time you can wear it right side out and they’ll all tell you how timeless you look. And if it costs the earth, what of it? These are investment pieces. You remember those, right? They’re the kind of clothes you will pass down to your son or daughter and they will actually wear them while telling a funny story about some wild and crazy thing you did when you wore that blazer that’s since needed patching at the elbows, but still somehow retains such inherited charm.
All while sipping a gin and tonic at the club. Lovely.
