Wellesley author and designer Valerie Gates will soon release a new book called The Alphabet of Bugs, and like her previous book on esoteric colors, the focus is on going beyond the basics.
So rather than a predictable A is for Ant and B is for Bumblebee, you get A is for “Ailanthus Webworm Moth artfully alights Amber” and B is for “Bess Beetle balances Bittersweet background.” So it’s alliterative, but with a twist.
“Bugs are really in now and I didn’t know that they were so popular until I started writing this book,” Gates says.
The book pairs Gates’s words with Ann Cutting’s insect photographs.
Gates will have a book signing at Wellesley Books on June 6, 3-5pm. If you’d like to buy an ABC poster, go here ($45, plus $10 for shipping/handling).
Meanwhile, it’s almost time for us to start updating our Swellesley page (“Bob’s bugs”) devoted to our local insect finds.
