Wellesley High playing football at Fenway on Thanksgiving morning

The Boston Red Sox have confirmed for the Boston Globe that high school football is coming to Fenway on Wednesday, Nov. 25 and the following day, Thanksgiving. This jibes with our report from a month ago that it looked as though Wellesley High and Needham High would be taking their rivalry to Fenway on Thanksgiving morning at 9am, and indeed that is the case.

So, not sure who’s going to be minding the turkey at your house if you’re interested in attending the game, but you might want to start figuring out logistics.

WHS couldn’t confirm the game earlier because it was in negotiations with the folks at Fenway.

A formal press announcement will be made at Fenway on Oct. 1, the Boston Herald reported. Presumably, ticket prices will be revealed then.

The field will already be set up for football because Boston College and Notre Dame are playing there the weekend before. Fenway muckety mucks, including incoming Red Sox President and Wellesley resident Sam Kennedy, have been busy finding activities to fill up the playoff-less park this year. Hurling will be played there in November and skiing/snowboarding will come in February.

Also  playing at Fenway on Thanksgiving Day are Boston Latin and Boston English, rivals who actually did play a game at Fenway back in 1912 — the same year Fenway hosted the National High School Football Championship Game. In addition, St. John’s Prep vs. Xaverian and BC High and Catholic Memorial, are slated to play at Fenway the day before Thanksgiving.

Fenway has also played host to high school hockey games in recent years.

About two-thirds of the people who responded to a poll we ran when first reporting last month on the possibility of a Wellesley-Needham game at Fenway said they’d be inclined to trek into the park on Thanksgiving Day.

The Wellesley High School Bradford interviewed a few of the WHS Raider players, and naturally, they’re pumped.
