Nothing gets downtown Wellesley shoppers excited like news about a new bank moving in, and that’s what you have to look forward to in January as Webster Bank replaces the Citibank currently at 84 Central St.
Citigroup announced in September that it had seen enough of Massachusetts for its retail banking business, leading to speculation over what might fill its current space.
Webster is a $24 billion regional bank that announced plans this week to open 14 banking centers in mid-January in the greater Boston area. Webster, which opened a flagship office at 100 Franklin St., in Boston six years ago, is not acquiring deposit or loan accounts from Citibank as part of the transaction. The bank serves both consumers and businesses.
Like all other banks, Webster touts its “unique customer service.”
