As of Friday, Wellesley won’t have Citibank to kick around anymore. It’s always been good fun to bemoan Citibank’s boring presence in prime storefront Wellesley Square real estate. But now that they’re leaving, let’s take a minute to remember the fun times. Back in 2012, the company garnered community goodwill by inviting one and all to bring in their holiday gifts to be wrapped up, free of charge. And remember the time that sharp-eyed employees helped the Wellesley police nab a suspected identity thief trying to ply his trade there?
Next in to the space: another bank. Webster Bank, a $24 billion regional bank, plans to open 14 banking centers in mid-January in the greater Boston area. Of course, they wouldn’t leave out Wellesley. The only question is how they plan on expressing their “unique customer service.” Time will tell.
