New Idle-Free Zone signs have been posted along Kingsbury Street in front of Wellesley Middle School to remind drivers to turn off engines while waiting for students. We haven’t been in the school of late, so not sure if such signs have also been posted in hallways to keep students and staff from hanging about.
In the name of cleaner air, Massachusetts has a law against idling your vehicle for more than 5 minutes.
This sign project was a joint effort between the Wellesley Natural Resources Commission, the Department of Public Works and Wellesley Green Schools.
Wellesley is now up to about 1 billion signs on its streets (we started counting one day from Wellesley Lower Falls into the Square and gave up). We propose for each new sign that goes up, another must go down. Sort of like Mrs. Swellesley’s clothing purchase strategy: She says if we acquire something, we need to get rid of something…
