Wellesley High School on Wednesday issued an alert that a single case of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, better known as the skin staph infection dubbed MRSA, has been confirmed at WHS.
MRSA is troublesome because it is contagious by personal contact or contact with surfaces/items that have been contaminated, though is not passed along via the air. MRSA shows itself in the form of redness, boils or other such skin irritations, and is resistant to many antibiotics.
WHS principal Jamie Chisum says extra focus is being put into cleaning the fitness center and locker rooms, and that the administration and school nurses will continue to monitor the situation.
