Another year, another Sorority International Badge Day, a special time when Wellesley woman from that particular and sometimes peculiar walk of life come together to exchange air kisses, sip chardonnay, and rehash days gone by at the Lambda Chi Wassail party or the TKE Red Carnation Ball.
I started attending this little annual get-together a few years back after being outed as a sorority sister by some other sorority sister (because what are sisters for?). The idea is that by getting together and remembering our college times in a Greek organization we will be reminded of our fun and service of long ago, and may even be inspired toward further service by perhaps helping out our local chapter of young women.
Now that I’m in the yearly swing of Badge Day, I wonder why I ever closeted my affiliation. This group of girly Greeks is so much fun that within a half hour of hanging out with them my speech patterns start to lean heavily toward italics, and I want to include heart emoticons at the end of all my texts and add exclamation points to every sentence of my emails.
At one time it’s true that I kept my life as a sorority girl hush-hush, but no more. I say it loud, I’m a Gamma Phi Beta, and I’m proud.
Yup, it’s all good. No more secrets. Well, maybe just the one…I do hope no one ever digs up those old roller derby video clips. Now that would be a problem.
If you were a tri gamma zeta tau, or some such, and this is the first you’ve heard about all this International Badge Day stuff, no worries. Sorority gals are creatures of tradition, so of course there will be more of the same next year. To get on the email list so that you too can dig out your badge and sister it up on the next big day, just go over to Swellesley’s Facebook page and PM me. I will hook you up with an invite for next year’s fun, and OMG I can’t wait to meet you!!!!
