Wellesley High School on Wednesday night feted its many accomplished student-athletes at the Raider Pride Banquet, doling out plaques, scholarships and kudos.
Football/basketball/lacrosse player Jake Mohan and lacrosse/ice hockey/field hockey player Sophie Vernon won Senior Athlete of the Year honors, and Athletic Director John Brown emphasized the school’s great sports participation level, which has included 80% of the Class of 2016.
But WHS would like to enable even more kids to take part in sports, including those with special needs.
Planning for an integrated sports program is in the early stages, according to Brown, who says: “It’s an important project and one that is going to benefit quite a few students at WHS that love sports and want to be a part of our program as an active participant.”
Naturally, money will need to be raised to support such a program, which will entail one-on-one help beyond what coaches and athlete volunteers can provide. Such programs have started to take hold at other local schools, including in Abington.
