George Campbell, the first and only head coach of Wellesley High School’s girls’ ice hockey team since its inception in 1996, is retiring from that job. But Campbell, whose teams have played at the Boston Garden in the state finals each of the past three years, is far from being done coaching in Wellesley.
Campbell will continue as Wellesley Middle Schools’ 8th Grade Football Coach and Wellesley High freshmen/assistant softball coach. What’s more, Campbell has asked to begin coaching Wellesley Middle School’s girls’ ice hockey team this coming winter and will be doing so, according to WHS Athletic Director John Brown.
“George has done an outstanding job as our coach for the past twenty years… Under George’s leadership the team has won multiple Bay State Conference Championships, a State Championship (2006), and the last three years played at the Boston Garden and has finished as the State runner-up,” Brown says. “More importantly, George and his teams have always represented our school and town with the utmost class and dignity while keeping the proper educational athletic philosophy. There is no one who cares more about the players and girls ice hockey than George Campbell.”
