The Wellesley South baseball team still has a long way to make it to Williamsport, Pa., for next month’s Little League World Series, but these 11- and 12-year-old boys are off to a fine start with their District 10 championship this past week.
Wellesley South shut out the Parkway team in the semifinals, with Jack Toomey’s grand slam being the big blow. Wellesley then topped frequent nemesis Newton SouthEast in the finals by a 4-2 score, with Mark Henshon pitching a great game and Drew Renzella knocking in all 4 Wellesley runs, 3 of them via a home run. This marked Wellesley’s first District 10 title since 2012. (More game details via Wicked Local here)
Up next are the sectionals, in which Wellesley will play in a pool set-up. Games are Wednesday July 20th at 8pm ( vs. Medfield), Thursday July 21st at 5:30 (vs. Savin Hill) and Friday July 22nd at 8pm (vs. Medford Blue). All games are in Medford at Gillis Park. If Wellesley finishes in the top two in the pool they will play in the Section 3 Final on Saturday July 23rd at 7pm at Gillis Park as they pursue a state title.
