Wellesley Track & Field project, Summer update

This update about the Wellesley High School Track & Field project from the Department of Public Works. All photo credits to the DPW.

The contractor continues to install the drainage system. This type of drainage system will allow rain water to infiltrate back into the ground directly under the field. If the drainage system reaches its capacity during large storm events, the system will allow the drainage water to overflow into Fuller Brook. The contractor has also installed the forms for the football goal post footings. Cement concrete will be poured this week.

The 10” HDPE perforated drainage pipe is presently being installed. The perforate holes (not shown) on the sides of the pipe allow drainage water from within the pipe to seep into the surrounding soil.

The drainage trench is covered with a black filter fabric and filled with crushed stone. The crushed stone and fabric allows water from the drainage pipe to infiltrate into the surrounding soil. The fabric also prevents the soil from clogging the perforated holes in the pipe.

A worker is standing in the drainage trench holding a white elevation rod and is taking grade readings from the laser in order to determine the proper depth of the trench. He then instructs the excavator operator if the trench depth is satisfactory or needs to be excavated deeper.

The forms for the football goal post have been set. The yellow plate in the center of the forms will be use to attach the base of the goal post.

The concrete footings for the pedestrian footbridge have been completed. The footings are surrounded by crushed stone embankment to help prevent erosion. The next step is to install the structural members of the bridge.

    As overflow from the drainage system will be flowing into Fuller Brook, what provisions are being made to regulate the fertilizer, striping paint and other chemicals and substances that will be put on the field in the course of regular maintenance?
