Wellesley Track & Field project — details, details

September 21, 2016 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

The following is an update on the Track & Field project from the Wellesley Department of Public Works. All photo credits to the DPW.

The track and field project has been progressing. Most of the synthetic carpet has been installed, but the carpet trimming and line marking work still remains and is expected to be complete within the next few days. The work on the donor wall, sound system, flag pole & scoreboard footings, drainage, electric conduits and the long jump sand pits remains to be completed.

Wellesley Track & Field
One of the two long jump sand pits being installed on the east side of the track this week. The base of the sand pit is covered with crushed stone for drainage purposes. A thick layer of sand will be placed over the crushed stone on the next step. The metal wall outlines the sand pit which will contain the sand from spreading beyond the border of the pit.

Metal sand pit covers will be used to cover and protect the sand pits from debris falling into the pit during non-use.

A supervisor (in center with yellow vest) using GPS (Global Positioning System) to pinpoint the location of the scoreboard footings before excavation. GPS relies on the triangulation link of the satellites orbiting above the earth and complex computerized calculations to pinpoint a location on the earth’s surface at a very high degree of accuracy and precision. This system is being used to help lay out the track, utilities, walls, footings and etc.
