World of Wellesley offers class on race for students

September 7, 2016 by admin 1 Comment

World of Wellesley is offering two opportunities at the Wellesley Recreation Center for students ages 12 -17 to participate in small group conversations about race.

Race, the Power of an IllusionRace: The Power Of Illusion
class# 431586 (Ages 12- 17) Page 31 in the booklet
Instructors: Michelle Chalmers & Izumi Ludgate
This 2-hour class will involve participation in a viewing of the powerful PBS Documentary, “Race: The Power of an Illusion, Part 1.” The episode helps us understand why it doesn’t make scientific or genetic sense to sort people into biological races, as it dismantles our most basic myths about race, including natural superiority and inferiority. Following the film, the class will engage in group discussions to unpack what was learned and have questions answered.
Location: Warren Building Min: 6/Max: 25
Mon 6 – 8 pm Sep 26 $12

Does Race Affect Your Life?
class #431577 (Ages 12-17)
Instructor: Michelle Chalmers & Izumi Ludgate
This 2-hour class for students will participate in a viewing of the powerful PBS Documentary, “Race: The Power of an Illusion, Part 3.” The film focuses not on individual behaviors and attitudes, but on how our institutions shape and create race, giving different groups vastly unequal life chances. It concludes by looking at why we can’t just get rid of race. Following the film, the class will engage in small and large group discussions to unpack what was learned and have questions answered.
Location: Warren Building Min: 6/Max: 15
Mon 6:30 – 8:30 pm Oct 24 $12
