Reminder: The Sprague Elementary School gym will be buzzing with excitement Wednesday, November 9, at 7pm, when 56 teams line up to compete in the 27th annual Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Wellesley Education Foundation. The Metco Marvels, the BUZZer Beaters, the Spellbinders, and the TinkerSpells represent just a few of Wellesley’s creative community members who will test their spelling abilities at this high-spirited event. Former WCVB sportscaster Mike Dowling, emcee, will keep things moving at a quick pace; teams have less than 30 seconds to spell each word. The event is free and open to the public; everyone is encouraged to come cheer on their favorite teams. All proceeds from team registrations will benefit the Wellesley Public Schools.
Last year’s winning team, Health Advances, swooped in from Weston to take the trophy with winning word threnody. Definition: a song, hymn, or poem of mourning composed as a memorial to a dead person (or to all the other spelling teams they slayed).
