Recently while performing our weekly recycling duties, we noticed that a part of the recycling area was under renovation. What gives, I asked RDF Superintendent Jeff Azano-Brown, who told me that it’s a pilot program to try out heated sidewalks. If it works, it should cut down on the need to shovel after minor dustings and thin films of ice, as well as improve safety in the area.

I’m curious as to how exactly they are heating the sidewalk. Any idea?
Hi, Jordan. I hope to do a follow up to the post with more detail when the project manager gets back to me. From what I saw, however, it appears like they dug a trench and put pipes underneath the newly paved sidewalk area in front of the recycling area that is part of the pilot. It seems like it will work along the same principle as radiant flooring, as in a bathroom for example.
That doesn’t sound like an electric system if it’s pipes. When you do the follow up it would be interesting to know what is heating the liquid flowing through those pipes and what kind of energy is powering it. Thanks.
