Wellesley HS wheel throwing students to fill bowls with food

We’ve posted about football-throwing students. We’ve posted about parties thrown in Wellesley. But I do believe this is the first time we’ve posted about WHS Wheel Throwing students. Welcome to the site, you workers in clay and creators of ceramics.

The artists are behind the first Wellesley Empty Bowls Banquet. The idea is to attend the Nov. 17 fundraiser at the WHS cafeteria, 6pm – 7:30pm, and donate $10 for a bowl of delicious soup. Better yet, throw down $25 for soup and take home a hand-thrown ceramic bowl created by one of the students.

Empty Bowls is a national grassroots movement to raise both money and awareness in the fight to end hunger. All proceeds will be donated to the Wellesley Food Pantry on behalf of METCO’s 50th Anniversary.

Wellesley Middle School students also flex their donations muscles at this time each year at their annual Turkey Promenade & Spirit Day, which will take place the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (11/24). Students collect food items in a friendly competition among homerooms, and promenade around the school, toting vast quantities of donations down to the gym, where parent volunteers sort and box it all. Their donations go to Voices Against Violence in Framingham, and to The Wellesley Food Pantry.

Remember, you can always promenade yourself straight down to the Wellesley Food Pantry, which is in great need of replenished shelves, especially as the holiday approach. Located at 207 Washington St., the Food Pantry accepts donations on Monday mornings, 8:45am -10am. In addition, donations may be deposited in the bins at Roche Bros. or Whole Foods during the hours they are open. Currently the pantry’s greatest needs as the holiday season approaches are:

  • Canned meats (always their #1 need)
  • Vegetable oil
  • Rice
  • Ketchup
  • Jams and jellies (especially non-grape)

Please check dates! The Health Dept. does not allow the pantry to put expired food on shelves.

Additionally, personal care items, which cannot be purchased with food stamps, are always in high demand. The most-needed items are:

  • Shampoo
  • Toothpaste and Toothbrushes

and they will also gladly accept:

  • Toilet paper
  • Paper towels
  • Deodorant
  • Shaving cream
  • Feminine care
