Congratulations to Jack Pilecki, the 30-plus year veteran of the Wellesley Police Department who will become the new chief once Terrence Cunningham leaves this winter to take a job with the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Pilecki became deputy chief back in 2013 and replaces Cunningham, who held the top job for 17 years and recommended Pilecki as his successor “without reservation.”
The Wellesley Board of Selectmen on Monday said that it did not conduct an external search for Cunningham’s successor given that a strong and willing internal candidate was available. Pilecki, who grew up in town, was lauded for his rapport with the public and for his patience in dealing with certain issues. Board Chair Marjorie Freiman said “the continuity of culture and of leadership that the department has been taking will be extremely important for the morale of the department.”
For his part, a humbled Pilecki pledged that “I will not disappoint you.”
