Wellesley Historical Society’s Winter Wednesdays kids’ program re-emerges on Jan. 4

The Wellesley Historical Society‘s Winter Wednesdays program, a free and interactive offering for elementary school age kids, starts up on Jan. 4 at Wellesley Free Library (1-3pm) and runs through Feb. 8. (Registration is not necessary.)

Here’s a look at the schedule:

Jan. 4

Advertisement: Exploring the changing methods and trends in advertising from the colonial period through today.
Children will view advertisements from various time periods, and discover how they have changed, and what advertisements can tell us about people and their communities.

Clothing and Fashion: Children will explore how fashion, types of garments, and clothing manufacturing practices and materials have changed over the years using primary sources.

Transportation: Wellesley has changed tremendously since it was settled, and that change is due in a large part to advancements in transportation. Discover the various ways people traveled to and from Wellesley and within Wellesley over the years since the town’s founding in 1881.

Maps and Atlases: Maps and atlases have been used for centuries, and can give us quite a bit of information about towns and cities today. Looking at old ones can tell us a lot about the past too. Children will view copies of old maps and discover Wellesley’s past through these significant primary sources.

Food: Food is a part of everyday life. Though people have always eaten food, the types of foods and the way foods were obtained have changed significantly over time. Children will learn about the history of food preparation, consumption, and trends over the last two centuries.

Buildings of Wellesley: Wellesley has lots of buildings that have been around for 100 years or more. How have the buildings in Wellesley changed over the years, and what do they teach us about the history of the town? Children will explore the buildings of Wellesley using old photographs and other primary sources.
